just finished reading the book ATONEMENT and watching the movie on tudou.com. the storyline is really amazing and it gropes into guilt, shame, consequences, love and hatred. hahaha i dun think it make sense now.
the setting of the story is in london, in the pre WWII period. there is this girl by the name of Briony. as a young child, her command of the language is very strong, she likes to write tales and tries to write a play. during one summer, on a hot day, she sees her sister, Cecilia taking off her outer clothes and jumping into the water to retrieve a broken vase piece (the vase is a family treasure) in front of their childhood friend, Robbie Turner. Robbie is the one who broke the vase. After the incident, Robbie and Cecilia realised that they are in love. but Briony does not interprete it that way. she thinks that Robbie is a sex maniac and she commits a crime.
The crime changes Robbie's and Cecilia's life forever. Briony spends her lifetime trying to atone for her crime and Robbie in the end chooses to be in the army to fight in the world war because he doesnt want to stay in the prison.
If you want to know the ending, watch the movie. it is really good.
the story touches me because it is all about feelings. Briony committed the crime purely because of sisterly love. she wanted to protect her sister but of course in the wrong way. the consequences of it all was too much for Briony to bear. (I cringed and my heart when i read the last few pages and watched the last few minutes of the movie.)
also, even though the crime caused Cecilia and Robbie to be separated, their love for each other was so real and intense that they have never ceased to write letters to each other and Cecilia kept asking Robbie to come back to her after the war.
life is about LOVE. if there is no love, there is no point in living in this world.
For God so loved the world that He sent His one and only Son to die for us.
heavenknows
