Tuesday, August 19, 2008:food for thoughts
This is a super duper late entry in view of the Olympics. I had long wanted to pen this down but again it is due to laziness. haha.

Unless you live in an area where there is no internet, TV, radio etc. etc. or u are just a hermit living in this lonely planet you will have heard of this name: MICHAEL PHELPS. he is really a legend in making waves and breaking records. He did his best and he delivered, with the whole world watching him. The whole world's attention is on him.

Another wonder is our very own Tao Li. She was the shortest swimmer in the 100m butterfly. She was unknown to the world. Yet she created history by shaving just less than 2 sec in the heats. I did not manage to the catch the heats but i saw the semifinals. she was amazing. She was the last swimmer in the last 50m. i thought that she was a gone case. but in the last 25m, suddenly this super small size girl juz came out from nowhere to come in the 3rd in the 1st round of the semifinal. that race was just so awesome. and i was glad i managed to catch it.

They sort of motivate me, a lowly nothing to set my goals in life and to work on them. of course, i know that all these are impossible without God. but by not working hard and depending on God, you will be testing God to prove that He is indeed the almighty to do the impossible for you. of course that shall not be the case. for it is written in the Bible, Thou shall not put God to the test.

Another point that i want to highlight is about foreign talent in singapore. With the singaporean table tennis team getting the coveted silver medal and Tao Li being recognised and congratulated for her results, more people are lamenting that they are all not local born, local bred. to put it crudely, can these people just shut up?

from young in primary schools, we have been asked not to be busybodies in school. dont be monitor, dont answer teachers' questions in class since there are 39 other students in class to do that. y must it be me? in a bid to protect their children, these parents have caused our generations to be not outspoken and have this "y me" mentality.

so when we grow older, nobody even volunteers to be monitor in class anymore. nobody even volunteers for anything any more. even when students are arrowed to do tasks for teachers or for their CCAs, parents will ask " y must it be you? y cant it be anybody else?"

and so in this dog-eat-dog society, parents just want students to excel in their studies. other things come later. for those sport people or in other arena where they are representing singapore, they can be anyone else other than their precious children. there is nothing wrong in this mentality. who doesnt want the best out of their children? who doesnt want their children to be able to survive in the future?

yet, it is also these parents or the whole generation, rather who are the ones who are lamenting why these sports people are not local born, local bred. since there isnt anyone who is "made in singapore" willing to put studies aside to train all the way, y cant those who are "made in china" but groomed in singapore be given recognition and credit? mind you, Tao Li is 18 this year already and yet she is only studying Sec 2/3 level at the Singapore Sports School.

oh! and i want to say about the word surviviability! i hate this word to the core.. really! how i hope this word can be burnt and incinerated and vanished from this world. yes, in the nation's context, we are very vulnerable. the government has to think much ahead of other countries to grab hold of any opportunities to ensure that the economy of the society be healthy. singapore after all is a country with no natural resources.

but but but.. what about each individual or family unit? how far are we going to stretch the meaning of this word. we are living in an era where our motto in life is survival of the fittest. what is definition of the fittest? who is currently the fittest? we dunno.. so we continue to fight for excellence and make sure that we are able to survive today. people are loosely defining more and more terms. take comfortable for example. people will say that we want to live comfortable lives, so we cant have too many children. with higher standards of living, we have to keep more to ourselves to ensure that we live comfortably. so what is their definition of comfortable? landed property? tours to exotic countries every year? buying branded stuff and go to high end restaurants for meals? yes, i am making an extreme point here but what i say here definitely make sense.

i think we need to constantly remind ourselves that there are alot of people in this society who needs help too. yes to those who are fit or fitter than the rest, i think we can stop and help those who have been left behind. of course, not at the expense of our own lives where we come to the point where we cant even cope anymore.

God gives us lives to ensure that we have fulfilled lives. fulfilled in His way, not ours. we are not going to bring all our accolades, fame and fortune to our graves. God is only going to see our souls and nothing else.
